auscultation

The project

Auscultation is a short film inspired by a third-year medical student’s lived experience. Quinlan Morrow wrote a dramatic short script articulating the systemic stressors on physicians and patients trying to care for the whole person. Rarely are physicians offered stories authentically portraying their daily experience. Unlike the generalized view of TV medical dramas which feature a large ensemble and multiple cases per episode, Auscultation is a close-up of three characters in one room, depicting the nuances of a single VA patient visit.

In a time of dehumanization and corporate interests dominating U.S. healthcare, physicians are often pitted against the clock while caring for patients. Auscultation challenges the idea of efficiency in a flawed system by highlighting the specific needs of the veteran population.

what is auscultation

Auscultation is listening to the body's internal sounds, typically using a stethoscope. This physical exam technique is the heart of our film. As the medical student gathers her VA patient’s history and auscultates his heart, her careful listening elicits vulnerability and opens the possibility for healing.
